Artificial Intelligence: Sustainability Partner of the Future?

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a powerful tool in corporate sustainability strategies. Rather than simply measuring environmental impact after the fact, organisations are using AI to predict, optimise, and reduce it in real time. From intelligent building management systems that automatically adjust heating, cooling, and lighting based on occupancy, to AI-powered logistics platforms that optimise delivery routes and reduce fuel consumption, the technology helps businesses identify efficiencies that would be difficult to uncover manually.

Beyond operational improvements, AI is also accelerating sustainability reporting. Companies can analyse vast amounts of emissions, energy, and supply chain data to identify trends, automate carbon reporting, and monitor progress against environmental targets. In manufacturing, AI can predict equipment failures before they occur, reducing waste and extending the lifespan of machinery. Retailers are also able to use AI to forecast demand more accurately, helping to minimise overproduction and excess inventory.

Of course, there is an interesting irony at the heart of AI-driven sustainability: the same technology helping organisations reduce emissions and energy use also requires significant computing power. Large AI models consume substantial amounts of electricity and water to train and operate, and in the US where roughly 60% of the electrical grid is powered by fossil fuels, this has a large and direct impact on total emissions. As AI adoption accelerates, businesses will increasingly need to consider whether the environmental benefits of these applications outweigh their own digital footprint.

This has sparked growing discussion around transparency and accountability. Some policymakers, researchers, and sustainability advocates are calling for AI-related energy consumption to be included within organisations’ reported operational energy use and carbon emissions. Recently, at London Climate Action Week the UN Secretary-General even announced the launch of a new AI Environmental Transparency Initiative to push private companies to be more forthcoming about the true cost of their AI infrastructure. As companies race to integrate AI into their sustainability programs, measuring the environmental cost of the technology itself may become just as important as measuring the efficiencies it helps create.
